OUTRIGGER CANOEING

Hui O' Hawaii of Sacramento is a cultural organization founded in 1971 that perpetuates the Hawaiian/Polynesian culture through outrigger canoeing and racing. What sets Hui O' Hawaii of Sacramento apart from other groups is our focus on promoting the Hawaiian culture through education and participation.

One way of promoting the Hawaiian culture is through the exciting and friendly competition of outrigger canoe racing. The hoe wa'a (paddlers) are taught various canoeing techniques by our coaches, class instructors and veteran paddlers.

As advocates for spreading the "Aloha Spirit" and Hawaiian culture to the community, Hui O' Hawaii of Sacramento is a proud member of the Northern California Outrigger Canoe Association (www.ncoca.com); a collaborative group of outrigger canoe clubs for Northern California. Because community involvement and our affiliation with NCOA is very important to us, our group rally's to host and/or co-host canoe racing events during the regular season. For the past 21 years, Hui O' Hawaii of Sacramento, Inc. has either hosted or co-hosted the annual North Lake Tahoe Criterion on Labor Day weekend.

Also, in support of the aspirations for higher education, Hui O' Hawaii of Sacramento hosts an annual fundraiser St. Patrick's Day Scramble at Lake Natoma in an effort to afford sponsor scholarships to our members.

Hui O' Hawaii of Sacramento welcomes anyone who is interested in learning about the culture of Hawaii and the "Aloha Spirit". For more information on outrigger canoeing, we welcome any and all to peruse our web site and encourage you to come out and meet us during our on and off-season practices listed on our home page! And no worries if you do not own any canoeing gear. We always have extra paddles and life jackets available. Friendly smiles and warm "aloha" await you on the water. A Hui Hou!

OUR INSTRUCTORS

John Green has been an avid paddler/outrigger canoe racer for more than 20 years. He is proficient with OC-1's (one-man canoes), OC-2's (two-man canoes) and OC-6's (six-man canoes). Kim Green, John's wife and partner both on and off the water, has been paddling for five years. While John and Kim are the primary instructors for our paddlers, there are plenty of support coaches and class instructors for all levels. As a testament to their admiration for friendly competition and for the sport of outrigger canoeing, this dynamic coaching ensemble offers their time and will share their talents with anyone who is interested in learning about outrigger canoeing for leisure or for friendly competition.
